Go-to-Market (GTM) Strategy

Also known as: GTM strategy, GTM

A go-to-market (GTM) strategy is the plan for how a company reaches its target customers and converts them into revenue. It defines who you are selling to, what you are offering, which channels you use to reach them, and the repeatable sales and marketing motion that turns interest into closed business.

What a GTM strategy covers

A complete GTM strategy answers four questions: who is the ideal customer, what problem does the offer solve for them, how do they find and buy it, and what does the team do at each stage to move a deal forward. It aligns marketing, sales, and customer success around the same target and the same definition of a good customer, so effort is not wasted on the wrong accounts.

Why GTM breaks at mid-market scale

Most firms have a GTM strategy on a slide and a different one running in their systems. The CRM stages, lead routing, and reporting do not reflect the intended motion, so the strategy never actually executes. Turning a GTM strategy into results is largely a Revenue Operations problem: the plan only works when the systems, data, and process enforce it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a GTM strategy and a marketing plan?

A marketing plan covers how you generate awareness and demand. A GTM strategy is broader - it covers the whole path from target customer to closed revenue, including the sales motion, pricing, channels, and the handoffs between teams.

Who owns the go-to-market strategy?

Leadership sets it, but Revenue Operations is usually what makes it real - translating the strategy into CRM stages, routing rules, and reporting so the intended motion actually runs in the systems the team uses every day.

How often should a GTM strategy change?

The core - target customer and value proposition - should be stable. The tactics, channels, and motion should be revisited regularly as you learn what converts, ideally against real pipeline and win-rate data rather than opinion.
